Filming my first music video with Kevin was a delightful and emancipating experience. I was not only impressed by Kevin’s professionalism but also his ability to communicate and deliver my intention, imagination, and artistry beautifully and beyond my expectation. He has the capability and capacity to create and maintain a safe and trusting space on set, allowing the artist to express their artistic expression freely, efficiently, and wholeheartedly. Since this was my first on-set experience for music video filming, I was quite nervous and afraid of making mistakes. However, because of Kevin’s open-mindedness, compassion, patience, and insightfulness, I was able to practice and master my dance choreography while receiving crucial guidance and suggestion from him to express my movements more effectively in film. He has strong insight and keen observation to bring out the best in the artist through his masterful, skillful, and impeccable point of view in Film and Cinematography. I had the pleasure of working with Kevin for over a year at DKA Productions, collaborating on several shoots and projects. DKA Productions is a student-run production company at UC Berkeley tailoring original and prime content for local businesses and organizations. As its Business Chair, Kevin was spectacular in his ability to juggle multiple projects and to get people on board with ideas – making a drastic improvement in the productivity level of our team.

I was particularly impressed by Kevin’s ability to design and lead film production workshops – combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience in a way that’s engaging and fun! New DKA members with varying levels of production experience could learn tons of solid skills from Kevin, and no matter how dense the materials were, Kevin made sure everyone left with a smile.

Kevin’s comprehensive experience in all areas of film production from writing to directing to cinematography is rivaled only by his electrifying ability to turn any moment on set or off into an engaging learning experience. Having worked with Kevin for three years in a variety of capacities, I can say that he is not only a consummate professional, but a passionate and talented educator, as I saw him over and over again take time out of his busy schedule to offer up informal individual or group trainings on any of his numerous areas of expertise to anyone who asked. Kevin Huang is an ideal educator because he possesses the perfect combination of technical filmmaking knowledge, educational skill, and understanding of film as a business. I worked with him as a director and cinematographer on countless short films and commercials over the course of 4 years, and he was consistently a leader on set. He knew exactly when to contribute his own creative ideas and when to step back and allow a collaborator’s vision to flourish.

Over the course of our work together in a professional film organization at UC Berkeley, Kevin envisioned, developed and executed a semester-long education program in filmmaking for our new members. Beginning with the fundamentals of film analysis and culminating in a month-long short film production, he designed a comprehensive syllabus to make sure that everyone who took his course was prepared to perform well on set. When I was crewing my own productions, I had confidence that any of Kevin’s former students would execute their roles efficiently and professionally.

In addition to his educational endeavors, Kevin took the reins of DKA Productions, our student-run commercial production company, and rebuilt it from the ground up. Recognizing the variable quality of our output in past years, he introduced lead cinematographer and editor positions to ensure that anyone working in those roles had a mentor and supervisor who could ensure that any work delivered to clients met his high standards. Under his leadership, the company nearly doubled its profits from the previous year, all while ensuring higher production value on our projects than ever before.

More than most people I’ve met in the filmmaking world, Kevin understands that film is both an art and a business, and that any aspiring filmmaker must find balance between the two in order to achieve success. He is simultaneously an artist, a businessman and an educator, and I trust him to pass along a potent combination of those skills to his students. I have complete faith that anyone who learns from Kevin will be well-placed to succeed in a university film program or as a freelancer, whichever path they decide to take.
